You may think a late period and a positive pregnancy test are all you need to make a decision about your unplanned pregnancy, but there’s more to know. For instance, did you know that over one in four pregnancies ends in a miscarriage, often within the first 12 weeks?

Get a free and confidential pre-abortion assessment from Mosaic, including a limited obstetrical ultrasound. This ultrasound can detect a fetal heartbeat, indicating that your pregnancy is progressing. Mosaic can also provide an estimate of how far along you are. Additionally, you’ll want to confirm that your pregnancy is in the uterus. A pregnancy outside of the uterus necessitates a different medical procedure altogether. While we do not perform or refer for abortions at Mosaic, we are a free first step so you can receive the clarity and information you need about your pregnancy before moving forward with a decision. Have I Miscarried?

Experts estimate that as many as 26% of all pregnancies end in a miscarriage. Because it takes a woman’s body days or weeks after a miscarriage to return to pre-pregnancy hormone levels, it’s possible to get a positive pregnancy test even after you miscarry.

If a fetal heartbeat is detected on an ultrasound, this can indicate that your pregnancy is progressing, which is important to determine prior to an abortion decision.

How Long Have I Been Pregnant?

If you’re considering an abortion, it matters how far along you are in your pregnancy. The number of weeks and days you have been pregnant often determines the method an abortion provider uses.

The abortion pill is only intended to be used through 10 weeks of pregnancy. The further along you are, the less effective the drugs are. For your safety, it’s vital to know when you got pregnant.

The type of surgical procedure used is also determined by how far along your pregnancy is. Early in your pregnancy, providers use suction or vacuum aspiration. Later pregnancies may require dilating (opening) your cervix and anesthesia for pain.

An ultrasound technician can estimate how many weeks and days you have been pregnant by taking measurements. It is also important to note that abortion is not legal in the state of Florida after 6 weeks.

Where Is My Pregnancy Located?

Although rare, some pregnancies form outside the uterus. These types of pregnancies are called ectopic. A pregnancy cannot safely grow anywhere other than your uterus.

If an ectopic pregnancy continues to grow, it can cause serious, life-threatening complications.  You would need to see your healthcare provider as soon as possible because an abortion cannot end an ectopic pregnancy.

Only an ultrasound can determine if your pregnancy is located in your uterus.
