Ordering the abortion pill online may seem convenient and straightforward. However, some risks and key medical screenings are often overlooked in an online abortion.
Without in-person medical oversight or pre-abortion screening, you are putting your health at risk and may increase your chances of complications.
Mosaic Sexual Health Clinic provides pre-abortion screenings at our clinic. While we do not provide or refer for abortions, a pre-abortion screening includes pregnancy confirmation with a pregnancy test and ultrasound, so you have the important medical information you need before making a decision.
Please note this does not act as a substitute for an abortion consultation, which is required by the state of Florida 24 hours before a procedure.

Why an Ultrasound Comes First
Regardless of your pregnancy decision, confirming important details with an ultrasound is a crucial first step. A pregnancy test alone does not provide enough information and only detects the pregnancy hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG).
During an ultrasound at our clinic, you will learn where the pregnancy is located, how far along you are, and whether the pregnancy appears to be developing. These details have a direct impact on your options and health.
For example, the abortion pill is FDA-approved through ten weeks of gestation. Trying to estimate how far along you are based on your last menstrual period isn’t accurate if you have an irregular cycle.
An ultrasound can also identify an ectopic pregnancy, where the fertilized egg implants outside the uterus. This is a medical emergency that cannot be treated with the abortion pill.
Around 10 to 20% of known pregnancies end in miscarriage. Because hCG can remain in the body after pregnancy loss, it is still possible to receive a positive pregnancy test result even if the pregnancy has already ended. If you have already miscarried, an abortion would no longer be appropriate, and additional follow-up medical care may be needed.
There Are Risks to the Abortion Pill
No matter where you order the abortion pill from, there are risks to be aware of, including incomplete abortion, heavy and prolonged bleeding, and infection. Some women have also described the side effects of cramping and bleeding as more severe than they initially expected.
Purchasing the abortion pill online adds to these potential risks since there is no way to verify how the drugs were manufactured, stored, handled, labeled, or shipped. This is why the FDA warns against purchasing the abortion pill online.
Complications can be harder to identify without medical oversight, since immediate medical guidance may not be readily available if your symptoms worsen. There are also emotional risks to consider that are often not emphasized.
