Your body is showing unusual signs, and you wonder if it means you might be pregnant.
Many pregnancy symptoms are similar to symptoms of other health conditions, such as premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or even food poisoning, so it’s essential to confirm your pregnancy with a pregnancy test and an ultrasound to find out for sure.
Early Signs and Symptoms of Pregnancy
While this is not an exhaustive list, the following pregnancy signs and symptoms may be some of the most common.
1. A Missed Period
One of the primary purposes of the uterus is to prepare for a pregnancy. Each month, it builds up a lining that will nurture an embryo if it becomes implanted.
If you are not pregnant, the lining will shed and exit the uterus, resulting in your period.
After conception, your body will produce hormones to stop ovulation and your period.
2. Tender, Swollen Breasts
When a pregnancy occurs, there are lots of hormonal changes. These changes can result in tender, swollen breasts as well.
The discomfort typically lessens in a few weeks after your body adjusts to the hormonal changes.
3. Increased Urination
The amount of blood in your body increases when a pregnancy occurs. The increased blood level, in turn, causes the kidneys to process more fluid, resulting in more trips to the bathroom.
4. Fatigue
During pregnancy, it’s common to feel more tired than usual. One theory as to why this occurs is your body’s heightened level of progesterone.
5. Nausea with or without Vomiting
Nausea often will begin about 1 or 2 months into the pregnancy. Increased hormones are the most likely culprit for this.
Some women struggle with nausea earlier, and some do not experience nausea or vomiting at all.
6. Other Signs and Symptoms
Other signs and symptoms of pregnancy include moodiness, bloating, light spotting, cramping, constipation, and nasal congestion. And there can be aversions and cravings for different types of food.
