Abortion Procedures
If you are considering abortion, it is vital to learn about the various available procedures.
The Abortion Pill (Medical Abortion)
The abortion pill consists of two medications, mifepristone and misoprostol.
Mifepristone cuts off Progesterone (nutrients) so the embryo can no longer grow. Misoprostol makes the uterus contract to expel the embryo from the body.
Medical Abortion Risks
- Incomplete abortion, which may need to be followed by surgical abortion
- An ongoing pregnancy if the procedure doesn’t work
- Heavy and prolonged bleeding
- Infection
- Fever
- Digestive system discomfort
Surgical Abortion
Surgical abortion is a more invasive procedure that surgically removes the embryo from the body. There are various procedures for surgical abortion, depending on the gestational age (the number of weeks) of your pregnancy.
Surgical Abortion Risks
Potential risks of surgical abortion include:
- Tissue remains in the uterus
- Injury to the cervix
- A hole in the wall of the uterus (uterine perforation)
- Moderate to severe vaginal bleeding
- Infection
What Are My Options for Adoption?
Some women feel adoption may be the right choice for them and their situation. Perhaps they think they aren’t ready or capable of parenting, but they want a relationship with their child.
There are various types of adoptions available depending on your preference.
Open Adoption
Open adoption allows the biological parent(s) to communicate openly with their child and the chosen adoptive family.
Semi-Open Adoption
A semi-open adoption also allows for communication between the biological parent(s) and the adoptive family. The difference is that a third party handles all contact.
Closed Adoption
Closed adoptions allow the biological parent(s) to remain completely anonymous, with legally sealed identifying documents.
When choosing an open or semi-open adoption plan, you determine who will raise your child. Often, birth mothers receive financial help for pregnancy-related expenses during the planning process. The adoption agency that our Center works with ensures that this is a completely free option for women.
